Critical Care

This 41-bed unit which combines both medical-surgical and cardiac critical care is the largest in Canada and one of the largest in the world. A wide variety of patients are referred for specialized care from the region, the province of Ontario, Canada and from other countries.

The Critical Care provides a number of unique services including Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation, the Berlin Heart ventricular assist device, continuous renal replacement therapy and neuro-monitoring. We provide complex care for patients with a variety of diagnoses including trauma, transplants, burns, cancer, respiratory diseases and patients admitted for post-operative care. We admit approximately 2000 patients per year and have seen a steady increase in our census and acuity over the past six years.

Patient Care

Patients are cared for by a comprehensive multidisciplinary team of specialized and advanced practice nurses, attending and consulting physicians, fellows, residents, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, social workers, physiotherapists, dieticians, information and administrative workers and child life specialists. We operate with a philosophy of patient-and family-centered care and encourage families to be an integral part of the care team and to be present throughout their child’s stay.
