Otolaryngology

The Department of Paediatric Otolaryngology is fully affiliated with the Department of Otolaryngology, University of Toronto. As such, the mission of the Department of Otolaryngology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, is within the framework of the faculty’s own mission statement, to provide excellence and international leadership in all aspects of Paediatric Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery, by teaching, undertaking research in this and related areas, and providing exemplary clinical practice in the broad field covered by the discipline.

Our primary postgraduate mission is to train Canadians for practice in Canada but we also have an international mission. Our Fellowship training program allows for training of fellows from other countries at a post-residency level.

The department, under the direction of Dr. Vito Forte, Otolaryngologist-in-Chief, is the largest in Canada, and ranked one of the busiest in the world. There are 12,000 ambulatory visits to otolaryngology each year. The surgical case load is approximately 2,500, 50 per cent of which are major in nature and involve all aspects of otolaryngology.

Special areas of clinical expertise have developed over the years. Care is multidisciplinary in nature. National and international consultations are facilitated through the use of video conferences. Surgical correction of complex problems on children from around the world have been made possible by the charitable support of The Hospital for Sick Children’s Herbie Fund as well as competitive rates offered to private and third party providers. All international activity is coordinated through the International Patient Program.
