Family Centred Care Advisory Council

There is an exciting new volunteer opportunity at SickKids for family members and past patients (over 18 years.) Although the Hospital has had a ‘family voice’ in the past through the Family Advisory Committee (FAC), a new council, the Family Centered Care Advisory Council (FCCAC), has been launched. Our mission is to strengthen the collaborative and productive partnership between Hospital staff and families, thereby improving the overall quality of care provided to patients.

While council members’ backgrounds, experiences and interests vary, each members’ commitment to support and improve family-centred care for all children and families brings us together to form a partnership with staff to enhance the quality of care for all. We work in partnership with staff to address issues that are important to patients and their families, including such topics as infection control and patient safety to diversity and content of hospital brochures/signage.

We share our stories with new nurses, residents and medical students in our education program. We help them to understand how the family-centred care approach benefits both families and staff, enhancing the environment of mutual respect and trust throughout the hospital.

Members of the council sit on various Hospital committees to provide an experienced family voice, including the Emergency department, Families and Surgical Experience Task Force, Families as Partners in Patient Safety and much more!

This collaborative partnership between families and staff will help to ensure the best possible care for all patients.

If you would like more information or would be interested in discussing a volunteer position on the council or a subcommittee, please contact us.
