SickKids Blueprint for Patient Safety

The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) has an international reputation as a leader in children’s health care.  Our own experience, however, and evidence on the prevalence of error in health care has shown us that even the best, all too often, make mistakes. In 2002, responding to a compelling goal to make our hospital safer for the vulnerable children and families who turn to us for care, we launched the Blueprint for Patient Safety, a comprehensive and action-oriented plan.

This article, Building from the Blueprint for Patient Safety at The Hospital for Sick Children , touches on the 10 components of the plan, focusing on specific initiatives and lessons we have learned while using the Blueprint to build our patient safety program and develop a culture of safety within the organization.

The annual Blueprint, which provides us with a solid foundation for building our safety program, is updated regularly to reflect changing needs and advances in the field. The current plan represents the 9th iteration of the blueprint.
